How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

fit great, works easy

use these jacks all the time

The trailer part was delivered on time and the unit was the right item, the first time.

Wow! This is a quality jack for the price. I just needed a simple, light duty jack as a replacement for the original one on a small cargo trailer. Even thought its weight rating was the same as the original, close inspection revealed that is constructed of noticeably heavier components. It was a direct replacement except for some minor fitting through the existing hole in the "A" frame trailer tongue. I am a returning customer to etrailer.com and will continue to do in the future. As far as I am concerned, they set the "gold standard" for the way online businesses should operate. They make the whole buying process (product selection, payment, shipping, etc.) simple and user-friendly. Way to go etrailer!

Thanks for checking in with me.I am still extremely pleased with both products! Great quality and reasonably priced. Etrailer is FIRST CLASS. I have told all my friends that etrailer is the ONLY place to shop for all towinghauling accessories because you have knowledgeable staff, great customer service and fantastic prices!

This side wind jack mounted on my Look cargo trailer in minutes. Now my tailgate has the clearance to open when I need items in the bed of my truck.

by:

Perfect replacement fit, very good communication. Jack was not in stock but I was promptly notified and given other options. Stuck with original choice, which was shipped and delivered in the time framed given. The hardest part of installation was the motorcycle ride to Ace on a beautiful 60 degree December day to get new bolts.

The jack does its job, it has been up and down several times.

Excellent product quality. Great initial service.

Would recommend to anyone needing a trailer jack.

It’s working fine.Thanks foe checking

by:

Jack was priced right for sure. I had to take a dremel tool and widen the bottom hole on the tongue so that it would fit down in the hole but once done, the job looks and works great..

by:

I bought this to replace the factory original I destroyed by not getting the trailer hooked up right. I ground off the footplate and about an inch of the jack tube before I got stopped. This jack fit the bolt holes perfectly, once I realized the back two mounting holes are actually 3 1/4 in. apart... not 3 in! The jack, based on the "industry standard of 3 in." actually does have a front and a back. The decal is on the front. (Um... I'm new at this.)

by:

Easy to install. The old one was welded and had it cut off and then managed to bolt this one on. No problems after a year and handles the weight of the small cargo trailer fully loaded with no problems. Product was good quality and delivered promptly.

by:

I received my product and after reading the reviews prior to ordering I was looking forward to the easy install.
when I received it and started the install, I found I was done in about five minutes!! It was straight forward and fit just like to original without a hitch!!! the jack was of great quality and worked like a charm! Thanks!!

Perfect replacement for the original jack on my trailer

The jack has been working great, I added a grease fitting to be able to lube the inside which makes it smoother to operate

by:

This tongue jack has a very hardy construction that simply feels strong when handled, but at the same time requires little effort to crank. My one gripe would be that it doesn't come with mounting bolts, so you'll have to go out and purchase your own separately. Overall, I am confident in my choice of new hardware for an old trailer.

by:

Hey! It's a trailer jack. It appears of quality construction and works smoothly. The price was fair and the delivery was immediate. thanx etrailer po

by:

I have seldom used a retail portal with the features and information that etrailer has. As a first time user, it made a hard to find part easy to find and identify for my application. Shipping was instantaneous, packaging was extra sturdy. Explanatory text made sure I stayed on the right track.

I'll be back!

by:

I bought this to replace the 1000lb jack on my boat trailer that someone hit while plowing and bent it. I settled on this one because of the price and installed height. (My old one was also too tall to allow me to lower the tailgate) this one installed easy, works as it should and even seems smother than the old one was before it was damaged. I would definetly buy another one if i needed to.

by:

Exact replacement for my 7000lb flat bed trailer. Easy installation. One problem was that the bolt slots were wider then the slots on the OEM jack so I had to use washers to ensure a tight fir against the bolt heads.

by:

Needed replacement trailer jack on short notice

eTrailer had a great price, shipped the trailer jack within 24 hours and I had it installed in four days from my order date.

Great product value and excellent service

Highly recommend eTrailer

Thanks

I replaced the jack on the tongue of my big trailer with a jack from etrailer. I am very impressed with the quality of the jack and the fit was perfect. Based on this experience I bookmarked etrailer and recommend you at least give them a look.

by:

Worked like a charm! Easy installation, easy turn handle and lifted great on a 10,000 lb trailer with 800 lbs of tongue weight.

by:

Great transaction as usual with Etrailer. Shipping and communication is great each and every time.

by:

Jack was as advertised. Easy to install. Shipping was prompt. Has worked perfectly for a year.

by:

Received my A-Frame Jack very quickly and was just the right jack for my horse trailer. The old original jack was bent and no longer working well and the new jack works great and was easy to install. Thanks for the great service!

by:

The trailer jacks were perfect fit and man they make cranking up that trailer a breeze

Great product and great everything at E -Trailer.

  • Recommended Electric A-Frame Jack for Trailer with 5,824 Dry Weight
When looking at electric A-frame jacks, the important weight to consider on your trailer is its tongue weight. This is the weight that the jack will actually be lifting and not its total loaded weight. A trailer's tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. If your trailer has an empty weight of 5,824 pounds, we can estimate a dry tongue weight of around 580 to 875 pounds. Note though that you will want to also account for the loaded cargo weight as well when the trailer...

On the Pro Series Round, A-Frame Trailer Jack, # PSEA20000103, it measures 8 inches from the mounting bracket to the bottom of the inner tube. For the footplate, # PS1400700340, or the Wheel, # PS1400750340, (both fit this jack) the pin diameter is 5/16 of an inch and the length is 2-3/4 inches. • Correct Weight Rating For A-Frame Trailer Jack On 6700lb Trailer
An A-Frame jack only needs to be rated high enough to support and lift the tongue weight of your trailer. Since your trailer weighs 6700lbs and tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the trailer weight you should have between 670-1005lbs tongue weight. With that figure in mind the Pro Series Round, A-Frame Jack - Topwind - 14" Lift - 2,000 lbs # PSEA20000103 you were looking at would be perfect if you are wanting a manual jack, or the # EJ-3520-WBX with a 3500lb rating would be a perfect...

  • Why Does an A-Frame Trailer Jack Get Difficult to Crank
I spoke with my contact at Fulton jacks and he stated that what you are describing is a symptom of the jack screw inside the jack seizing up. Jack companies don't make the internals of their jacks easily accessible for cleaning and lubrication. Typically to get them apart requires quite a bit of work and then they are nearly impossible to get back together properly. You can try lubricating the jack from the bottom of the inner leg up into the top of the jack, but it's going to be much...

Swivel jacks do not work well with A-frame trailers, so a swivel jack would not be a good choice. Your best bet would be to stay with an A-frame jack. I would recommend finding the jack with the lowest possible retracted height. For instance, the Pro Series # PSEA20000103 you mentioned has a retracted height of 8 inches, which would be the distance between the bottom of the jack tube and the mounting bracket. The Pro Series # PS1401000303 has the same 2000 lb capacity as the jack you mentioned,...

  • Would the Pro Series Round, A-Frame Jack # PSEA20000103 fit a 3-1/4 inch Bolt Pattern on Trailer
The standard bolt pattern for a-frame jacks is 3 on 3 inch. However, if you look at the mounting flange of the Pro Series Round, A-Frame Jack # PSEA20000103 you will see that the mounting holes are slotted and allow for a bit of wiggle room there. An extra 1/4 inch wouldn't be a problem at all. This jack would work well for you, it has a 2,000 lb capacity so it would work well on your trailer.

I was able to find the first jack you referenced, the EA2000103, and it is basically just a topwind, a-frame jack with a 2,000 lb capacity. For a jack that is basically identical you would want the Pro Series Jack part # PSEA20000103. Check out the review video I attached for more info as well.
